Financial Squeeze

Squeezing Money

In case you haven't been paying attention to the financial markets, there have been issues in the US lately with the stock market sliding and a credit squeeze. It's caused some problems for some companies, particularly financial based ones, but the reach could be further than that.

I saw this slideshow about what this "crisis" (I'm not sure it's a crisis) could mean for IT departments and there were some interesting items in there. The possibility of less credit out there will usually mean the CFOs of companies will be more conservative, perhaps lowering budgets. Since many of us have fairly established IT groups with regular updates occuring to hardware and necessary maintenance and support costs, this usually means the fun stuff, new projects, pilots, proof-of-concepts, might get delayed.

Or it might mean enough of a slowdown that you'll have the chance to really test your code and build your own applications rather than buying them.

One other interesting note is the idea that more non-US vendors, especially European ones will gain market share since the Euro and other assorted colorful currencies will be strongr, allowing those vendors to lower prices.

Time to Reboot

Pirate Boot Screen

It might have been awhile, but last week's release of a number of critical patches means that more than a few of you will likely be rebooting after patching, as quite a few patches from this past week require reboots. I'm not sure how many of these are required for your servers as they target Office, Media Player, and IE, but if you ever browse from a server for some reason, you definitely should apply them.

And even if you don't necessarily need them, if someone is going to apply them for you, it's a good time to be there and ensure your servers recover from a reboot. It's something we don't think about, but a reboot is a perfect time for trouble. A hard drive doesn't want to come back up, some problem in one of the boot sectors or early start routines that's gone unnoticed, even a misconfiguration that doesn't take effect until a reboot.

I've had all of those happen to me and often at bad times. While I don't want to reboot servers every month, I think a once or twice yearly planned boot is a good time to ensure that things are still working. You never know when the will be some issue and you'll have an unexpected reboot only to find your SQL Server instance not starting.

Cross-Platform

Years ago I ran an April Fool's joke that mentioned SQL Server would be released on Linux. It was very popular and it's probably something I should do again.

Anyway, this week I caught a blog post by SSIS guru Jamie Thomson, that Google Gears is a browser extension that incorporates a full searchable RDBMS for storing data locally. He speculates that SQL Server CE might be used ofr a similar type of functionality.

No big deal, CE is merely some DLLs that you invoke to create a SQL Server instance, primarily on smart phones and other very small devices, but it runs fine on Windows desktops as well. The interesting thing Jamie mentions is that Silverlight might require some of these capabilities and it's going to be cross-platform. If that's the case, then will SQL Server CE get ported to other platforms?

Who knows, but I think it would be a good idea. Heck, I think SQL Server itself should get ported. It's just a better product in many ways than Oracle and DB2, easier to work with, more developer friendly, etc. I don't know if they ever would do it, but I think that it's a something worth pursuing.

Heck, I never thought I'd see MacOS on an Intel chip.

Steve's Pick of the Week : Making Change - Slightly strange and I have no idea why you'd care, but it caught my eye, so you get it as the item of choice. Be sure you read Raymond Chen's link in there and think about just how bad kids are with math today.
